How to create a SumUp account
Step 1: Sign up to SumUp
You will do this as an individual rather than an organisation
- Account type: Select individual / Sole trader
- Use your personal name and email
- Describe activity clearly and simply e.g.: “Collecting small voluntary contributions for a local social group to cover refreshments and hall hire (not-for-profit).”
Step 2: Identity verification
SumUp will request that you (the individual) will
- Upload personal photo ID
- Provide home address
- Act as the compliance contact
This does not mean:
- The money becomes personal income
- You personally own the funds
But it does mean:
- You are accountable if the activity breaches SumUp terms
Step 3: Link payouts to the group bank account
This is the critical step.
In the SumUp dashboard:
- Go to Profile → Payout settings
- Enter the group bank account details
What SumUp allows in practice
- The bank account name does not have to match the SumUp individual’s name
- This is common for:
- Trustees, Treasurers
- Event organisers, School PTA officers etc
Step 4: Choose how you will accept payments
Useful options include:
- Tap-to-pay on a smartphone
- QR code payments
- Optional card reader
A physical card reader allows it to be passed round the group, at the same time as the pot, rather than the Treasurer having to be available for a Tap-to-pay on a smartphone. (Passing a printed QR code, see below, avoids the use of a physical reader if donations are made only by smartphone. However, this does not allow people to make payments by a debit/credit card.)
If the Treasurer cannot be present at every meeting, another key officer in the Group could also have their own personal SumUp on their smartphone and direct funds to the group account.
How to create a QR code for payments via SumUp
Step 1: Create a payment link or QR code
Use the SumUp app or dashboard to generate a QR code linked to the local group account.
Step 2: Display the QR code at meetings
You can print it, display it on a device, or share it digitally.
